Lexus New York can mean a lot of things – New York Lexus dealers, Lexus cars in New York, a picture of a Lexus in New York, used Lexus cars in New York, etc. Even the New York in Lexus New York or New York Lexus is ambiguous because we all know there is New York state, and New York City, but did you also know there is New York County? Which New York did you mean when you decided to use the internet to make your life easier? The confusion is primarily because we have to realize that we’re not talking to our friends or neighbors, we’re not even talking to a computer, we’re dealing with databases when we try to retrieve information using the internet. And since that’s the case all that information stored in the database is also sorted. One other point is that the information source may be on a totally different page as what we had in mind.

For those seeking out Lexus New York information; customers, owners, etc., as I’ve pointed out before the internet can be a maze. To reinforce this point (again) I decided to determine the location of Lexus dealers in New York based on the cities in New York. When I searched on Google for New York cities I got a list of hits of course, the one I found interesting was Wikipedia since that should be up to date or so one would think, but also because it is a very popular site and many people would think it credible. Then I used the official Lexus site to se who they list as authorized dealers. Let’s see how this goes.

According to Wikipedia there are 62 cities in New York. Now this number seems pretty low to me, but maybe that’s just me. Note that as I mentioned internet/database information is sorted and so we have a nice list here based on alphabetical order. It could just as easily have been sorted by other characteristics such as size, population, or whatever. I didn’t do a lot of analysis of the cities listed before moving on to find Lexus dealers.

Now the Lexus site is pretty straightforward for retrieving this information. It has a button to find a dealer, then allows you to select a state using a dropdown menu box. If you select NY the way I did you’ll get a result that says there are 13 Lexus New York dealers. Actually it’s probably more accurate to say there are 13 Lexus NY dealers because that’s what was in the drop down and that’s what’s in the address for each listing versus the actual words. These dealers are again sorted alphabetically, but not by location regarding the city they’re in, but by dealer name. This is perfectly useless order unless the city is in the title.

Okay, so we have 62 cities in New York and 13 Lexus NY dealers, obviously not every city has a dealer. We should have expected that result so it’s no big deal to find out that’s the case, we just need to match the existing dealers to the different cities. The problem I started with just dealer names so I added the city address for them in the table as well. Here is where it gets interesting because the cities listed do not include the ones where dealers are located except for Rochester and New York.

Now is when I started taking a closer look at the 62 listing I got from Wikipedia and noticed serious shortcomings. There is literally a city listing for every letter in the alphabet except Q and Z. I actually made note of this immediately, because I thought it was interesting and again expected. That was before I remembered – QUEENS, NY! I’ve been to Queens, you’ve heard about Queens is it not a city? Well, according to this it’s a county and the Lexus of Queens dealer is in Long Island, NY. Long Island however is not in the list of cities. I’m not arguing one way or the other, but that means for Lexus New York, only 3 at best of the 13 authorized Lexus dealers in NY listed on the Lexus site match up with the 62 New York cities listed on Wikipedia and that has to be confusing.
